Leadership, Advocacy and Neighborhood Revitalization
Community HousingWorks is committed to the belief that affordable housing CAN improve and revitalize communities. By offering leadership and advocacy training in the communities where we own housing, we ensure the success of affordable housing, the revitalization of the community and neighborhood engagement. These programs:
- Engage residents in community strengthening activities
- Support emerging community leaders and groups
- Empower community residents to facilitate and participate in community change
Some Examples:
During the early 1990's Libby Lake in Oceanside was a stronghold of the Mesa gang and residents didn't feel safe walking down the street, even during the day. Through CHW's leadership training and mentoring, community members have bought and revitalized homes, restored a lake park, created a new health center and can even have pizza delivered at night!
- Crown Heights in Oceanside, an immigrant community with the poverty level of Barrio Logan, worked with CHW to create Cesar Chavez Park and now has an active community association.
- In Chollas Creek/City Heights we partnered with Somali refugees to complete a gut rehab that transformed one of San Diego's worst slum complexes into award-winning Bandar Salaam. This year, residents have formalized a leadership group that is actively participating in the planning of a nearby park and the reduction of gang influence and involvement.
- Our annual FaceLift event brings together volunteers, local businesses and community organizations to clean-up the City Heights neighborhood one block at a time!

Farmworker Assistance
Since 1993, Community HousingWorks has been a leader in addressing the farmworker housing crisis in North San Diego County. For 6 years our HOGAR program helped over 150 homeless farm worker families acquire permanent housing, health care and job assistance. Our continued housing development efforts ensure that over 100 of these families will find homes and services in our complexes.
Additionally, each year we coordinate with local social service and health organizations to provide emergency assistance to over 800 farm workers through the distribution of blankets, clothing, food and staple items such as flash lights, rain coverings and cold weather gear. Support the cause!
