Success Stories

Adrián Alcalá
First-Time Homebuyer
National City, 2004

Adrián moved to San Diego two years ago with the dream of purchasing his first home.  His wife stayed behind and he rented a small bedroom in East San Diego. Through hard work and perseverance, they are back together and first-time homeowners.

“This is an opportunity we wouldn’t have had without the help of Community HousingWorks.  My wife and I are eternally grateful to be together again and in our first home.”

The Jiménez Family
Fallbrook View Resident
Fallbrook, 2004

The Jiménez Family moved into Fallbrook View from substandard housing that was causing the illness of their 3 year-old daughter.  Now they are in a safer neighborhood and the Learning Communities program has helped their eldest daughter improve her math scores.

“We used to feel squeezed, barely making it every month because rent was so high.  Last month we bought a computer that our daughters use every day for their schoolwork.”

Joyce Winge
Hillside Village Resident
Poway, 2003

Joyce and her 13-year-old daughter, Jayden, moved into newly completed Hillside Village in July of 2003.  Joyce works for a local engineering firm as an administrative assistant.

“I’m looking forward to settling into the Hillside community, raising my daughter in Poway where I grew up, and being able to live independently.”

Deborah Gardenhire
First-Time Homebuyer & Parkview Terrace Past Resident
Poway, 2002

Deborah moved into CHW’s Park View Terrace with her daughter Sierra, in 1998.  Previously, she was living in a one-bedroom apartment, working two jobs, and struggling with the loss of her husband.  In December 2002, Deborah bought her first home, thanks to Park View Terrace.

“It really gave me the chance to finally save enough to afford my own home.”
